Police in Somerset are once again advising people not to leave items in cars and vans because there is a greater likelihood that their vehicles will then be broken into.

There have been a series of thefts in the South Somerset area recently. A Vauxhall Corsa had its stereo stolen earlier in the month and on the same night, a Mitsubishi was broken into and an iPod Touch and DVD player were stolen.

A Ford Transit van had its sat nav stolen and another Ford Transit had tools and drills taken from within it. Vans are often targeted by thieves as there is a greater likelihood that they will contain items of value.

PC Iain Selley said:

“People should not be unduly worried about having their car broken into. Despite these recent offences there are some simple steps which can reduce the risk of being targeted. They do not take much time, and it is cheaper than having to pay for a new window and the replacement of any valuables taken. Quite simply, please take all valuables with you when you leave your vehicle. Any items, even seemingly worthless old coats, might be of interest to thieves in case they are hiding more valuable items or have bank cards in the pockets.”

Van insurance is also of crucial importance. Make sure your policy covers you for loss of the contents of the vehicle as well.
